With a little research, I figured out why the Cowboys don't have the same swagger that they did when Jimmy was here. For the 5 drafts that Jimmy was in Dallas for, he selected 7 guys from THE U:
1. Kevin Williams (93)
2. Darrin Smith (93)
3. Russell Maryland (94)
4. Mike Sullivan (94)
5. Jimmie Jones (90)
6. Rod Carter (89)
7. Randy Shannon (89)
Now, four of these guys did not contribute to our Super Bowls, but the simple fact of the matter is that we were getting guys from a notorious "Cowboys Killer" university. It is also important to remember that Jimmy was the coach of this school prior to his time in Dallas and that Tom Landry also drafted Michael Irvin the year before Jimmy came to Dallas. Here is the WILD part, since Jimmy left in 1994 the Cowboys HAVE NOT DRAFTED A SINGLE PLAYER FROM THE U! No wonder the school takes it out on us everytime we play a notable player from there. Another interesting fact - Jimmy 'resigned' from the Cowboys in mid March (about a month before the draft). Had we kept Jimmy, we could have avoided blunders such as these:
1. In 2002, needing a safety, the Cowboys drafted Roy Williams. Comment: Ed Reed was the safety from THE U, and also the obvious choice.
2. Prior to the 2000 season, the Cowboys needed a wide receiver replacement for Michael Irvin, so they traded their next two first round choices for Joey Galloway. With two straight 5-11 seasons, the Cowboys would have been picking top 10 in the draft. In the 2001 draft, thanks to our trade, we missed out on two notable 'Cowboys Killers' in the first round - Reggie Wayne and Santana Moss.
3. 2002 could also be known as the 'Cowboys Killer' Draft. With the Cowboys passing up opportunities such as Reed (mentioned above), Jeremy Shockey, and then drafting Andre Gurode (a good player, but replaceable) instead of Clinton Portis, when Emmitt was going into his last year with the team.
I can't believe I never realized this earlier. Jimmy would have kept doing his thing and drafting products from the U, but since he left we have drafted ZERO players from there. It is nice to know that they worked together to get the final victory at Texas Stadium. These former U players could have very well been Cowboys but we passed on them. Ray Lewis, Willis Mcgahee, and Ed Reed were huge contributors to the grand finale at Texas Stadium and they were victorious. Just think, they could have been Cowboys.
