With a little research, I figured out that Jerry Glanville was an assistant coach in Detroit from 1974 -1976. While there, a one Bob Kowalkowski played on the offensive line. Bob Kowalkowski had a son named Scott, who was drafted by Philadelphia in 1991 and played with them through the 1993 season. After that year, Scott followed in his Bob's footsteps and joined the Detroit Lions.
NFL Extreme is mostly based on the 1993-1994 season, meaning that Scott Kowalkowski still was playing for the Eagles.... or was he? There could be a significant mistake in either www.pro-football-reference.com or www.wikipedia.com. Let me explain....
Upon further research, I discovered that Jerry Glanville coached the Atlanta Falcons from 1990-1993. In 1990, his Falcons played the Eagles, but Kowalkowski had not been drafted yet. In 1991, 1992, and 1993, the Falcons do not ever play the Eagles (not even in a playoff game), and it was during these three seasons that Scott Kowalkowski supposedly played for the Eagles before leaving for Detroit. In 1994, Atlanta plays both Detroit and Philadelphia, but as we know, Glanville is not coaching the Falcons anymore. So, during what game did Jerry Glanville reveal to his player that he coached "[Kowalkowski's] Dad in Detroit?"
Conspirators have made many assumptions in regards to the validity of this classic quote:
1. It could have been a preseason game
2. It could have been a postseason game
3. He could have been talking about the player randomly - afterall, Scott Kowalkowski was a standout player at Notre Dame and maybe Jerry had interest in drafting him.
4. He may have joined the Lions in the 1993 season. The Falcons played Detroit in the opener of that season and it is a possibility that his stats are incorrect. According to his statistics, he played in zero games for Philadelphia in the 1993 season, so maybe he was traded before week 1.
Regardless of when Jerry made this comment, at least we know he wasn't completely bonkers and he was referring to actual people.
